Inflation Reduction Act
After much gridlock, discussion and compromise, lawmakers finally passed a sweeping bill through Congress, which now sits on Biden's desk to be signed. On Sunday, Aug. 7, the U.S. Senate passed The Inflation Reduction Act to tackle tax reform, medical provisions, and investment in climate and clean energy. Outlined in the bill is the historic investment of $369 Billion to combat climate change. The bill includes significant investment in the transportation and manufacturing of solar panels and wind turbines. In addition to investments, the bill provides tax credits for those purchasing electric vehicles and homeowners who upgrade their houses to be more energy efficient. Laura Deehan, State Director of Environment California, joined Insight to discuss what the landmark legislation means for California.
California Supreme Court Chief Justice retiring
A daughter of Filipino farmworkers in the Sacramento Valley who would grow up and rise to the top jurist in California and oversee the nation’s largest court system. That’s the story of Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who became the first person of color, and only the second woman, to be appointed Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court in 2011. But after a 12-year term, Cantil Sakauye announced just months before the midterms that she will not seek re-election this fall. She’s credited with guiding the court through two big crises: The Great Recession and the COVID-19 Pandemic. Governor Gavin Newsom praised her for being a fierce defender of access to the courts who fought against immigration enforcement raids at courthouses and a leading voice of bail reform. The announcement surprised some legal experts, and others noted her departure could allow Governor Newsom to shift the ideological make-up of the court further to the left. Last week, Newsom nominated Justice Patricia Gurrero, who joined the court in March this year, to Chief Justice. Insight to the Chief Justice about her decision to step down, her career and legacy, and the biggest challenges facing her successor.
Nevada County Film Festival
Regarded as the “Sundance of the Sierra,” The Nevada City Film Festival kicks off on August 26 in historic Nevada City. The films will screen at the Onyx Theatre, Pioneer Park, and the historic Nevada Theatre, California’s oldest existing theatre. In previous years, The Nevada City Film Festival hosted filmmakers such as Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris, Academy Award-winning film Little Miss Sunshine directors, and many iconic Red Hot Chili Peppers music videos. The 22nd anniversary of The Nevada City Film Festival will feature a list of international feature-length and short films, including a special screening of “Ghost World,” the 2001 cult classic directed by Terry Zwigoff. Joining us today to talk about the Nevada City Film Festival is Executive Director Jesse Locks. Also joining us is Nancy Svendsen, director and producer of “Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest.”
