Sacramento, CA
The head of Sacramento Regional Transit is praising fare enforcers like the Sacramento Sheriff's deputy shot in the face last week at the Watt Avenue light rail station.
RT CEO and General Manager Henry Li says they stepped up fare enforcement 18 months ago.
"The fair jumping activities have been reduced from nearly 15 percent a year and a half ago, right now about five percent," he says. "So it's a huge improvement in fare inspection."
Li says Deputy Alex Ladwig was assaulted and shot with his own gun after approaching a man to see if he had a ticket. Li says Ladwig was in good spirits when he visited him after the shooting.
Li says RT continues to add security measures. He says the system now has more than two-thousand cameras, including 20 at the Watt Avenue station alone. Li says they are also putting in public announcing systems at each station.
