What if you started an exhibition that never needed to stop? That’s the thinking behind “do it,” the longest-running exhibition ever. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, co- director of the Serpentine Galleries in London, “do it” began in Paris in 1993 when 12 artists were invited to propose artworks based on written instructions that could be openly interpreted at every presentation. Those instructions were translated into nine different languages and circulated internationally as a book. The exhibit makes a fresh appearance in Sacramento this January at the Verge Center for the Arts. Verge has chosen 20 instructions from a compendium of 250 to present as realized objects, performances and public engagements. We’ll talk with Verge co-founder Liv Moe about the exhibit and we’ll hear from one of the artists participating.
