In 1971, at the prestigious Stanford University, a group of young men were paid to participate in a study designed to observe the psychological effects of prison life on inmates and guards. The experiment was supposed to last two weeks but things went so horribly wrong that the plug was pulled after only six days. The "officers" began to display authoritarian measures and ultimately to subject some of the prisoners to torture.

Granite Bay High School graduate Kyle Alvarez directed a new film about the study called The Stanford Prison Experiment. The film took home the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. It opened in select theaters last month and recently became available on video on demand services.
