Col. Felix Rodriguez While viewed as an inspirational figure for many, Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara was at one time an American enemy, and viewed by many as a murderer for presiding over executions following the Cuban revolution. In October of 1967, the Bolivian army and America's Central Intelligence Agency captured Che Guevara as he tried to spread the Cuban form of revolution into South America. Cuban exile and CIA operative Colonel Felix Rodriguez was the last person to interrogate Guevara before his execution on October 9, 1967. Rodriguez is in Sacramento for the opening of an original play "Che Guevara and the Dispossessed" which opens at Sacramento State University Thursday night, and he is joining us" to talk about his role capturing the revolutionary icon.
"Che Guevara and the Dispossessed" Argentinean doctor turned Cuban revolutionary, Ernesto "Che" Guevara, has been an icon for the struggling classes since before his secret execution in 1967. His beret-clad image has become ubiquitous and can now be found on T-shirts, wall posters, bumper stickers and even sunglasses. But the truth about the Marxist revolutionary's character is not well known or understood. And that’s where California State University, Sacramento Theater Professor Robert Pomo comes into the story. He has been meticulously researching the mythical Che, with whom he shares an Argentine heritage, for an original play based on Guevara's life. Eventually, Pomo’s research even led him to develop a relationship with Col. Felix Rodriguez, a Cuban exile and CIA operative who was present during Che's execution in the Bolivian jungle. "Che Guevara and the Dispossessed" premiers Thursday, Nov. 14 at Sacramento State University and will feature a Q&A with Colonel Rodriquez, who will be present.
