It will be easier for mobile food trucks to operate in the city of Sacramento by the end of next month. The Sacramento City Council voted Tuesday night to lift a 30-minute parking restriction that made it tough for the trucks to do business. Under the rules adopted by the Council, trucks won't be allowed to park within 50 feet of an intersection or 100 feet of an open seating area.
Some restaurant owners, like Simon Devere White of Devere's Irish Pub, wanted more restrictions.
"We are here today to support staff's recommendations with the condition the council include the following amendment in the proposed ordinance -- to add a provision that requires mobile food trucks to operate at least 100 feet from brick-and-mortar restaurants for health and safety reasons," he says.
Paul Somerhausen with the food truck group, SactoMofo, wanted fewer restrictions. He asked the council to consider reducing the early morning buffer around clubs to 400 feet.
"Part of your proposal is 1,000-foot restriction around nighttime establishments," says Somerhausen. "I think that's a prime opportunity for the food trucks to be profitable because there's very few restaurants that operate after 10 p.m. and yet there's food trucks that would be happy to take that opportunity."
The council vote was unanimous to keep the late night restrictions and to allow trucks to park in most spaces as long as the parking meter allows. The new law will go into effect in 30 days.
