Excellence in Jazz is celebrating the women of jazz all month during Women's History Month. Tonight we shine the spotlight on Catherine Russell.
Vocalist Catherine Russell was born into musical royalty. Her father was Louis Armstrong's music director. Her mother was a member of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm.
- Before embarking on a solo career Catherine sang background for Steely Dan, David Bowie, Madonna, and Cyndi Lauper.
- Her 2006 debut album "Cat" received rave reviews and she was praised for impeccable phrasing and a relaxed delivery.
- In 2012 Catherine received a Grammy as a featured artist on the soundtrack album for HBO's Boardwalk Empire.
- Her latest album, "Send For Me' reached #1 on the national jazz JazzWeek Chart.
