London's Piccadilly Circus in 1932
While English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams conceded that some movements might evoke moods, activity and locations of London, he remained adamant that his "A London Symphony" - often referred to unofficially as his "Symphony #2" - was not "program" music that depicted such scenes but was "absolute music." To further avoid the impression of it being program music, he even wrote in program notes for a concert that he should have more accurately titled it, "Symphony by a Londoner." It’s today's Midday Masterpiece.
