English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) served as an ambulance driver during WW I. Inspired by the paradox of witnessing beautiful sunsets over killing fields in northern France, he composed his Symphony No. 3 giving it the bittersweet title “Pastoral.” The symphony became known as an elegy for the dead but can also be heard simply as an utterly beautiful meditation on peace. The ending, with vocalise soprano, is haunting and sublime. Sir Adrian Boult conducted the premiere of the symphony in 1922 and to celebrate the composer’s birthday today, a 1968 recording of Boult conducting the Vaughan Williams "Pastoral" symphony is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
