Composer Dmitri Kabalevsky
Born in 1904, Russian composer Dmitri Kabalevsky adopted the Soviet outlook and purpose and composed music that never met with censorship from authorities. Music that won favor in Russia included operas, patriotic vocal works and music for films, stage and for children as well as larger orchestral compositions. His Symphony #2 premiered in 1934 in Moscow but not until 1942 in the United States where it became one of his few very popular works in the west. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
