Mozart composed six piano concertos in 1784 and was at his height of fame in Vienna. But when he completed a new concerto in 1791 three years had passed since writing his previous concerto and his fame had fallen. So much so that when he premiered that new concerto, what would be his last (No. 27), his premiere performance of it in March 1791 was third-billed on the concert advertisement of another musician. This would be his last public appearance as a pianist. But all was not sad. Mozart was actually upbeat in 1791 about his future. He recently gained a new appointment for a Cathedral in Vienna and in 1791 completed a string quartet, the operas La clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflöte, the Clarinet Concerto, and the Requiem among other works. So, while it may be mellow with some mature serenity, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 is not filled with the sad ruminations of a man facing difficulties or even death. It's today's Midday Masterpiece.
