In the twenty-eight years between his first and second Piano Trios, the music of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns had become conservative. Not because he had changed, but because music around him had. In his elder years he was still composing according to his youthful style and the classical principles of Mozart and Beethoven; but by that time, the music of Wagner had made an impression on just about every younger composer. Seeing all the change around him while he was still composing with trust in the time-tested manner, he wrote with scornful sarcasm to a friend, "I am working quietly away at a trio which I hope will drive to despair all those unlucky enough to hear it.” That Trio would turn out to be what has been called the greatest French piano trio of the 19th century. The Piano Trio No. 2 by Saint-Saëns is this afternoon’s Midday Masterpiece.
