Sergei Rachmaninoff circa 1921 | photo: Library of Congress
In his final composition, Sergei Rachmaninoff looks back on his life and proposes a look forward after death. His "Symphonic Dances" from 1940 are in three movements with the first quoting his Symphony No. 1 from 1897 whose premiere was a disaster. In the final movement, the medieval chant for the dead, Dies irae, is heard but is ultimately triumphed over with a quotation from Rachmaninoff's 1915 "All Night Vigil," representing Resurrection. At this point in the score Rachmaninoff wrote, "Hallelujah." The last music he composed, the "Symphonic Dances" premiered in January 1941. He passed away in March 1943 just days before his 70th birthday. Rachmaninoff’s "Symphonic Dances" are today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
