Losses in the early life of English composer Gerald Finzi (born July 14, 1901) seem to have established in him a bit of indifference toward himself but concern for others. His father died when he was seven, he lost his three brothers before age 18 and his trusted music teacher Ernest Farrar died in WWI. After study, he taught music at the Royal College of Music in London for three years from 1930 but he never felt comfortable in the bustle of the big city. In 1931 he met and married his wife Joy, an artist, and later settled in the countryside to support her pursuits in art and raised apples, saving varieties from extinction. After losses of dear friends and relatives, Finzi found solace in poetry and later amassed hundreds of volumes and, with his wife, dedicated themselves to editing and preserving the legacy of poet and composer Ivor Gurney who survived World War I but suffered “shell shock” and was soon hospitalized. In this time Finzi composed mostly songs and choral works. After a move to another small village Finzi and wife Joy founded an amateur chamber orchestra that he conducted until his death, giving a boost to contemporary composers by offering premieres of their new music and giving aspiring performers, such as guitarist Julian Bream, a chance to perform. World War II pressed Finzi into service for the Ministry of War, again offering help to others, working to settle refugees and even lodged some in his own home. The hardships upon others fraught by the Second World War seem to have inspired in Finzi a new spiritual quest for expression and he composed several new choral and instrumental works. After a lifetime of altruistic service to others at the expense of his own oeuvre, and after about a dozen years of ill health, Finzi died at the age of fifty-five in 1956. To give him some recognition he didn’t seek for himself, we’ll air probably his most popular instrumental composition, his Clarinet Concerto of 1949, as today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
