Igor Stravinsky playing cards
With dancers dressed as playing cards, Igor Stravinsky’s 1937 ballet “Jeu de cartes” (Card Game) is often interpreted as a satirical allegory of the rising European political troubles in the 1930s. The self-sure Joker wins a hand simply by declaring himself greater than the other cards in play. But his cockiness won’t save him in the end and he is ultimately overpowered. A commission from choreographer George Balanchine, “Card Game - A Ballet in Three Deals” (as Stravinsky appropriately called each act) quotes famous works by earlier composers, altered in his neo-classical manner, including his transformed take on the “Fate” theme that opens Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and used here between acts as the “dealing” music. Stravinsky’s “Card Game” is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
