A number of musicians and composers of mixed African and European descent, such as violinist George Bridgetower and the Chevalier de St George, made their way to Paris, at least at some point, in search of fame. But the Chevalier de Meude-Monpas was born there in about the mid-1700s. And while Meude-Monpas was a musketeer in the service of Louis XVI and published two books on music and six violin concertos, he was still seen as exotic and suffered prejudice. His Violin Concerto #4, with soloist Rachel Barton Pine, is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
