1803 Portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven by Christian Hornemann
The chamber ensemble of piano, violin, and cello was a familiar form in the late 1700s. Such a trio could also show off the new piano that was quickly replacing the harpsichord as the favored keyboard in the home, salon and concert hall. Works for the new instrument could also be a showcase for emerging piano virtuosos. Mozart, Haydn and others composed such Piano Trios; in 1795, Beethoven published his own collection of three Piano Trios (his Opus 1). Himself one of those new piano virtuosos and a remarkable improviser on it, for the next few years he wrote extensively for the piano in solo, chamber and concerto forms. But in 1804 he tried something no one else had yet done: basically, a Concerto with the piano trio as the solo instrument. Balancing three different timbres of instruments against an orchestra, combined with giving each of the piano, violin and cello sufficiently interesting and challenging themes, was a formidable task. It’s a work of great bravura in both senses of the word: excellence and daring. Beethoven’s Concerto for Piano, Violin, Cello and Orchestra is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
