California Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom spent part of their Earth Day weekend at Soil Born Farms in Rancho Cordova, highlighting the state’s farm-to-school initiative.
The farm is a nonprofit that offers educational programs and apprenticeships for farmers. School superintendents, program grantees, legislators and members of California Native communities attended.
During the program, attendees and the Newsoms — including their four kids — worked on a creek clean-up project.
“Choosing to hold this convening on Earth Day was very intentional,” Siebel Newsom said. “Through Farm-to-School, we’re developing young climate stewards and educating them on the connection between agriculture, climate and their health.”
The Farm-to-School program connects small-scale farmers with school districts to teach children about the connection between food and the world and to get more fresh fruits and vegetables into their diets.

In partnership with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, the program works in tandem with the state’s universal school meals initiative in order to give students two free meals with locally sourced produce.
State officials say the program has reached over 1.5 million students, 163 school districts, over 50 farms and four food hubs.
