Saving Swenson Golf Course in Stockton may be inching closer to a possibility.
The City Council will update the public at Tuesday night’s meeting on progress to maintain the course.
Last year, Mayor Michael Tubbs said the city could not afford to subsidize its two municipal golf courses at more than $800,000 a year.
Since then, neighbors of Swenson in north Stockton have rallied to preserve it as a golf course and green space that they say would be negatively impacted by development.
Tubbs said he is encouraged by residents’ support of Swenson.
“I’ve seen them taking more of an ownership of eating there, playing there, et cetera,” he said. “I hope it continues, or once we get an operator in that, it will operate the course without a city subsidy.”
The city has received three proposals for the space, including one seeking a 15-year lease that would keep the golf course intact.
Stockton’s other public course, Van Buskirk, might be shortened to nine holes or be replaced entirely with a pool, skateboard park or soccer field.
