Sacramento city residents can recycle yogurt containers, shopping bags and bottle caps again, now that the city's waste management department has returned to accepting plastics labeled 1 through 7.
City spokesperson Erin Treadwell says the city restricted recycling to plastic types 1 through 3 last June after China changed its plastic purchasing practices.
"We decided, you know what, let’s welcome this back into the blue bins," she said.
The city has been taking the full range of plastics since November, but the department is spreading the word now to encourage smart recycling in the new year.
"There was a huge stress on the system nationally, especially in California because we are a kind of recycle-forward state," Treadwell said.
She reminded residents that putting items that can't be recycled in the blue bin can be more wasteful than throwing it out.
You can find full lists of what you can and cannot recycle at SortSmart.org, in addition to a “Waste Wizard” tool where you can look up specific items.
