City of Sacramento hotel rooms could soon come with emergency “panic buttons.”
A city committee will consider on Tuesday requiring hotel and motel operators to install these or similar devices in all rooms.
The goal is to protect workers, who labor advocates argue are vulnerable to sexual harassment or assault on the job, and have been lobbying for panic buttons and other protections across the country.
New York and Chicago already require that hotel operators equip rooms with panic buttons. When a worker presses one, it alerts security.
Earlier this year, Sacramento County passed an ordinance that requires panic buttons or similar devices at hotels in unincorporated areas.
State lawmakers attempted to pass a panic button law this year but it never emerged from committee.
The Sacramento ordinance could apply to hotels and motels with more than 25 rooms, or about three-fourths of the city’s businesses.
