For fire evacuees, the unknown is one of the hardest things to deal with.
More than 8,800 buildings have been destroyed in the Camp Fire, including 7,600 homes. While residents have not been allowed back in to areas affected by the fire, Cal Fire now has a map to help people identify the status of their homes and businesses.
Cal Fire Damage Assessment Map
Cal Fire Captain Nick Wallingford, lead for damage inspection for the Camp Fire, says the agency’s new map allows residents to check on the status of their homes in the Paradise, Concow and Magalia areas.
"Each of those icons can be selected and within that icon, it will show basic information regarding the structure type and the damage or destroyed level," Wallingford said.
Red buildings are destroyed, orange have major damage, yellow have minor damage and green have little damage. Black homes had no visible effects from the fire.
Wallingford says Cal Fire expects the map to change.
“It's a work in progress and there is a significant amount of work to do and there are a significant amount of areas that our damage inspection teams still have not entered,” Wallingford said.
The map includes structures of all types. The Butte County Sheriff has not said when people will be allowed to return to their neighborhoods.
