Crews battling the North Fire in the Tahoe National Forest not far from Interstate 80 have been able to keep it mostly in check Tuesday, even as another fire started nearby.
Updated mapping has shown that the North Fire that broke out Monday near Emigrant Gap in Placer County has burned 500 acres, less than was previously reported, according to a Forest Service tweet. The blaze is 10 percent contained.
The North Fork, Onion Valley, Tunnel Mills, Lodgepole, Silvertip and Sunflower campgrounds were evacuated Monday afternoon, as well as the Lake Valley Reservoir area, according to a Placer County Sheriff’s Office tweet.
Cal Fire officials believe that the blaze started near the area’s campgrounds.
Meanwhile, mandatory evacuations were ordered for the Sliger Fire, which started Tuesday near the El Dorado-Placer county line. The wildfire has burned at least 65 acres northwest of Georgetown. Officials worry the fire will jump the middle fork of the American River and move toward Todd Valley. Evacuation centers are open at the Regional Park gym in North Auburn and the Foresthill Veterans Memorial Hall in Aurburn. Animals can be taken to 11232 B Ave. in North Auburn.
