The city of Sacramento and the Sacramento Unified School District are joining forces to increase the numbers of kids going on to college or trade schools.
According to Mayor Darrell Steinberg, the partnership is in its infancy. "It must be an aspiration of our city and all of our school districts to focus on our kids, from the cradle to the workforce," he said.
The city and district have have already identified several ways to help students continue their education.
Steinberg said it makes sense for the city and the district to work together. "We need to bring back the modern version of vocational education to our schools in California and the schools cannot do it alone," he said.
The city says its youth unemployment rate is among the worst in the country.
The Public Policy Institute of California forecasts a million jobs in 2030 will go unfilled because there won't be enough people with the required college degrees or trade school certificates.
The council and school board will hold a joint meeting on Tuesday night at Luther Burbank High School.
The city and the district are also working together to open school grounds to the public for community use.
