The man charged with killing 13 people as the Golden State serial killer was arraigned Thursday in Sacramento on 13 additional charges related to the kidnappings, robberies and rapes.
Prosecutors say he committed the crimes against women in Sacramento and Contra Costa counties.
It took Judge Michael Sweet about 15 minutes to read the 13 charges against Joseph DeAngelo.
Prosecutors can't charge DeAngelo with rape, as the statute of limitations has run out. The kidnapping to commit robbery charges are for crimes allegedly committed between 1976 and 1979.
Charlene and Lyman Smith were killed in Ventura County in 1980. Their daughter Jennifer Carole was in court and said it was a long 15 minutes.
“That was very intense and very tough. It was hard to hear each crime,” Carole said.
DeAngelo stood motionless inside the courtroom’s holding cell. He was noticeably thinner compared to his previous court appearance.
He is due to be back in court December 6.
