The counting of ballots at Sacramento County’s election headquarters is still going 10 days after the primary election.
Officials provided an update on Friday afternoon. The county estimates that it needs to tally 77,667 more ballots. So far, they’ve counted 266,562.
That number means that voter turnout in Sacramento will be significantly higher than the last midterm primary election. More than 40 percent of registered voters appear to have turned in ballots for the June 5 contest.
The sheriff’s race remains too close to call. Incumbent Scott Jones leads with 52 percent of the vote. He needs a simple majority to avoid a runoff in November. Second place candidate Milo Fitch trails far behind with 22 percent of the vote.
The next vote-count update will be Tuesday.
