Republicans are no longer the second-largest voting bloc in California, the continuation of a long decline for the GOP.
The Secretary of State’s Office officially confirmed Friday what a private political data firm reported earlier this week: The GOP has fallen behind No Party Preference in voter registration numbers.

Republicans hold 25.1 percent of registered voters, compared to 25.5 percent who identified without a party preference. More than 44 percent of registered voters are Democrats.
During the 1990s, Republican registration held flat while California’s population continued to grow over the last two decades. Starting in the mid-2000s, GOP registration began trending downward. And today, there are almost a million fewer registered Republicans in California than there were in 1996.
