Sacramento city and county offices were closed on Friday to observe the Cesar Chavez holiday. But about 50 county probation office employees and Supervisor Phil Serna were hard at work.
They were removing trash, pulling weeds and painting the inside of the Washington Neighborhood Center. Serna’s late father, former mayor Joe Serna, was an ally of Chavez.
"We're actually giving of time and energy to volunteer and to commit ourselves to a project which I think really honors his legacy,” Serna said.
LeeAnn McCluskey works for adult field services and said that “outside of just supervising community of offenders, we also do positive things like this, turning this center into something beautiful and something the community can take pride in.”
Joey Ramirez is the acting director of the center. He says that, at the cleanup, it was “great to see people and county servants come together on Cesar Chavez day to make an impact.”
Serna hopes to install a new heating and air conditioning system and give the outside of the center a new coat of paint.
