Half of the applications to grow and manufacture marijuana in the city of Sacramento are eyeing one industrial neighborhood — and its business leaders want to stop a flood of pot in the area.
Since it began accepting submissions in April of last year, the city has received 160 applications for pot grows and processing companies. But 80 hope to open shop in the industrial warehouse district near Power Inn Road.
“The clear majority of these are for cannabis cultivation,” reads a staff report.
That’s why the Power Inn Alliance, a business-improvement association, has asked the city to approve a limit on cannabis operations in the area, at 2.5 million square feet.
The city says if all 80 applicants are approved, the square footage of pot businesses in the southeast Sacramento area would be near this proposed number; there is an estimated 22.5 million square feet of building space in the Power Inn district.
The staff report says that, while the Alliance welcomes new pot businesses, too many could be a “detriment to the health and vitality of the business district.” The city cited concerns over land speculation and rising rents, business leaving due to hikes and a lack of economic diversity.
Half of the applications in the city are for these sites, which are east of Howe Avenue between Jackson Road and Florin Road. Other concentrated areas include Arden Way, Roseville Road, Richards Boulevard and near Fruitridge Road west of Highway 99.
A City Council committee discussed the proposed limit to prevent over-concentration near Power Inn on Tuesday.
