An annual event in Sacramento Thursday brought attention to roughly 63,000 foster children throughout California.
The names and ages of those kids were read on the steps of the state capitol.
Gail Johnson Vaughan is the founder of Families Now. She says many of these kids will end up finding a permanent home, but others will not, based on unfounded stereotypes.
"The beliefs that older children, children with behavior challenges, sibling groups, minority children, they can achieve families, we're seeing it all of the time," Vaughan said.
Vaughan says this year's list is about half the size of 29 years ago when the first reading of the names took place.
She says that's mostly the result of legislation that's been passed, but more work needs to be done.
