The head of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows is urging public support for a project that would combine the two, creating California's largest resort.
Andy Wirth is President of Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows. He says they're hoping to build a gondola connecting the two resorts.
"Projected travel time on the gondala is in the neighborhood is 12 and a half to 13 and half minutes," says Wirth. "So it'll be a quick, easy ride from the base of Squaw, to the base of Alpine Meadows."
Gondola rides will be included in lift tickets and season passes, which are good for both resorts. The proposal was first announced in 2015 and is still being reviewed by the U.S. Forest Service and Placer County Board of Supervisors. Environmentalists have raised concerns about the gondola disturbing wilderness areas. Wirth says the construction and routing of the gondola will be as environmentally sensitive as possible. Wirth is a member of Capital Public Radio's Board of Directors.
