Dozens of SPCA volunteers will put the finishing touches this weekend on a project aimed at improving the shelter experience for dogs.
The group will plant trees on a three-acre lot behind the SPCA on Florin Perkins Road. The empty lot used to be a weedy area where volunteers walked the dogs.
CEO Kenn Altine says volunteers and donors have pulled together to transform the lot into a park.
He says it helps socialize the shelter dogs who spend most of the day in confined spaces.
"So when they get adopted and you take them out to the park the first time, they get it,” he says. “They know what that means. This is how I behave in a park, this is what it looks like. You know and I think it just sort of helps that transition into a home as well."
This weekend volunteers for the SPCA, SMUD and the Sacramento Tree Foundation will be planting trees around the new dog walk.
The $40,000 project was funded through donations. Trees were donated by SMUD, the Sacramento Tree Foundation and the Growing Company.
The shelter typically hosts more than 100 dogs at any given time.
The SPCA is taking donations from people who would like to sponsor a bench or doggy drinking fountain in someone's name. People interested in donating should contact Michele Steiner at (916) 504-2870 or email [email protected] for more information.
