A new housing complex would include a mix of 44 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments at the intersection of Garden Highway and Miles Avenue in Yuba City.
Gus Becerra is Executive Director of the Regional Housing Authority, which covers Yuba, Sutter, Colusa and Nevada counties.
"This is not a temporary shelter," says Becerra. "This is permanent housing and so if you meet the criteria, we want to help ... and that's the whole point of partnering with the county and using their Behavioral Health Service dollars that they have available so we can build the project."
Becerra says Sutter County has already pledged mental and pediatric health funding for the complex.
Yuba County’s Board of Supervisors is expected to vote next week whether to do the same.
"If we line everything up to apply for tax credits, we wouldn’t know until late 2018 if those are awarded," says Becerra. "And then we would have a few months to close the construction financing. Best case scenario, we’re starting construction late 2018, early 2019."
Anyone can apply. Preference will be given to people from Yuba and Sutter Counties.
The project does not help Sutter County with the homeless population it currently has living in camps along the Feather River.
The county has said it will not move to evict those people until it has temporary housing for them.
