Crews have begun work to level the future site of Sacramento Republic FC's soccer stadium.
Kevin Nagle, the team's Chairman and CEO, spoke at a gathering of team supporters at the Railyards Thursday morning.
"We'll begin the process of installing backbone infrastructure like power, water and utilities," says Nagle. "Our plan is to complete this work by winter so that we may return back here next spring for a stadium groundbreaking ceremony."
The team has not been selected by Major League Soccer to join the league. Republic FC is one of 12 cities bidding to be an expansion team.
It plans to build a 20,000-seat stadium on about 15 acres.
The site's boundaries are 8th and 10th Streets, North B Street, and Railyards Boulevard.
The Railyards is the site of a proposed $5.3 billion redevelopment project with medical, housing, and commercial space.
