The City of Sacramento has begun holding public forums to get ideas for the river walk in Old Sacramento.
Jim Kiyak owns two businesses in Old Sacramento and says construction on K Street has hurt business.
"(What) we don't see is the foot traffic. We need something big to bring those people...Sacramento people gave up on Sacramento," says Kiyak. "They don't want to come this way. They think it is not safe. They think there is nothing exciting here."
Jon, Mia, and Shelley Perry are visiting from Portland, which has the Esplanade on the Willamette River.
"The thing about ours in Portland is it's right in the downtown section where everybody works, so it's so accessible," Jon Perry says.
"And they throw events down there too," says Mia Perry. "So, a lot of people know about it because there's events. And, I think it draws people to one of the main reasons Portland even exists in the first place is the river. So, you kinda get to experience part of its history just coming down to the waterfront."
The Sacramento City Council held a forum for ideas last week and plans to hold more in the future. Some concepts that have been floated by the community include: a ferris wheel and "something like Disneyland."
