UPDATE 4:50 p.m.: Temperatures in Sacramento are expected to top out at 111 degrees around 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
The extreme heat has organizers with the USA Track And Field Outdoor Championships rescheduling events at Sac State.
They'll now start an hour earlier prior to the heat of the day and an hour later for evening events.
USATF Spokesman Bob Burns says it's unusual for track and field events in Sacramento to be rescheduled.
"In 2014 we had the outdoor championships here and that was warm, but it went off well. We had the 2000 and 2004 Olympic trials and I do not recall any schedule adjustments due to weather," says Burns.
The longest events, the women's and men's 10 thousand meter races, will now be held at 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday night.
Events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are still scheduled at their regular times, except for the 20-K race-walk, which now starts at 6:45 a.m.
Original Post: Thursday’s schedule for the USATF Championships at Sacramento State has been adjusted due to high temperatures.
All Thursday events originally scheduled to start before 3:45 p.m. have been moved up an hour. Events originally scheduled to start at 4 p.m. or later have been moved back an hour. The 1,500 meter races were scratched and moved to Saturday.
USA Track & Field and Sacramento Sports Commission officials made the changes late Tuesday night to accommodate athletes and spectators.
The schedule is unchanged on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with one exception. The women's 20-kilometer race walk starts one minute after the men's race at 6:46 a.m. on Sunday. The walks are held on a loop course outside the stadium.
The revised schedule is posted online at usatf.org.
