Sacramento's West Campus High School held a ceremony today to celebrate its girls basketball team. They just came home with a state championship...and many lessons learned.
Lesson one: be thankful. One by one, 16 young ladies stepped to a podium inside a packed gymnasium and gave thanks to mom, dad, coaches, cheerleaders, the band, school staff, classmates and each other.
"It's amazing. The amount of support from this school. It's just surreal," said Kiara Jefferson. She had 24 points and eight rebounds in the championship game.
Lesson two: set goals. Namiko Adams is a point guard.
"I told myself that I wanted to win a state championship and in the beginning I guess every player had the same mindset: to get to state and win," she said.
Lesson three: work together.
John Langston is the team's coach.
"It was like trying to teach girls to come together for one common cause, not trying to take over, but trying to join in," said Langston. "So, when those things emerged, this team became who they became."
Lesson four: work hard.
Dree Edinburgh's daughter Julianna is on the team.
"It gives them a sense of learning how to be disciplined outside the classroom and inside the classroom," says Edinburgh. "It keeps them from things that, keeps their mind occupied on something more team-related instead of individually-related where it could sometimes get them into trouble or certain circumstances that they shouldn't be in."
West Campus won the championship over Los Osos High of Rancho Cucamonga two weekends ago.
