California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon's emotion was palpable after he left Los Angeles International Airport Saturday night. Rendon (D-Paramount) had just taken part in a protest against President Trump's executive order on refugees, and he had strong words about the president in an interview with Capital Public Radio's Ben Adler:
On when the president's executive order truly sunk in: It didn't really sink in on a human level until I was at the protest at LAX and met a gentleman by the name of Muhammad, who was very worried about his father, a 67-year-old man, who was en route to Los Angeles - to home, where he's a legal resident - and he was told that he wasn't going to be allowed to get off the plane.
On whether his recent quote that he doesn't necessarily "buy into" the assumption that there will be midterm elections in 2018 is hyperbolic: It's absolutely not hyperbolic. This is a man who does not understand separation of powers. This is a man who does not understand checks and balances. I think it's actually outrageous to call that hyperbolic. ... To bury your head in the sand, and to assume that things can't happen in this country that happened in other countries, is quite honestly arrogant.
On whether he believes the institutions of the United States are strong enough at a moment like this: I think it's very important that we start to think about the extent to which the military...will adhere to what (President Trump) wants - whether or not it's regarded as lawful or not.
