Arts were a focal point of this week's Sacramento City Council meeting.
Prior to one agenda item, poets from the group Zero Forbidden Goals performed.
"Sacramento's my home town, but I'm from the stars. There's galaxies behind these eyes and I will never die as long as we're alive."
When they finished, the council approved $500,000 from the City Innovation Fund to pay pilot public art projects and to study their effects on neighborhoods.
Mayor Darrell Steinberg says this plan will be different from previous pubic art projects in that artists will be mostly free of city requirements.
"Experiment around what works to enliven public spaces, to enliven the urban environment, to create that sense of excitement and then take the next several months, and use the results of this experimentation to develop our policy and our long-term investment strategy," says Steinberg.
The Council was also updated on the nationwide hiring search for a new Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Director. Former Director Shelly Willis retired at the end of the year.
The job will likely be posted by the end of January.
