The state department of food and agriculture says nine reindeer have been cleared for all "brand inspection and health requirements" so they can visit California on the evening of December 24 and into the early morning hours of December 25.
The agency says brand inspections and health requirements help veterinarians prevent the spread of animal disease.
Dr. Annette Jones granted the permit for Donner and Dasher and company with two conditions: the reindeer may not co-mingle with other reindeer in the golden State and the visiting reindeer may not be used for breeding purposes while they're visiting.
According to the CDFA, "the permit application was filed in person by a rotund, jolly man with a red suit, a white beard, and a pocketful of candy canes to share with agency staff. The signature on the paperwork reads 'K. Kringle.'"
