A long-time Sacramento record store will close its doors on Broadway later this month due to a rent increase. Records on Broadway opened on K Street in the early 1970s when vinyl ruled and it wasn't a vintage collectors item.
Long before Dennis Yudt got a job at Records on Broadway this year, he was a regular at the store's K Street mall location. He talks about a basement stash with hundreds of thousands of records - a music collector's dream.
"We've just got tons of vinyl of all different genres, you never know what you're going to find from one day to the next because we're constantly buying collections," says Yudt. "And it's just the excitement of the dig, the chase, the hunt. This is considered one of the best record stores in America and we're very proud to be in a great record town like Sacramento."
Prince visited the shop when he came through Sacramento. And hip-hop artist DJ Shadow, who grew up in Davis, featured the K Street store's interior on his 1996 album "Endtroducing."
As for employee Dennis Yudt he says even as this longtime, family-owned store closes he's confident Sacramento's other vinyl spots will "keep the faith."
