Some Davis locals are praising the community's response to a hateful letter that was recently received by the city's mosque. The Davis Islamic Center is one of many mosques around the country that received a letter from self-proclaimed supporters of President-elect Donald Trump.
Hamza El-Nakhal is a former member of the Davis Islamic Center. He says the Davis community has already held events in response to the letter.
He says hundreds of people crowded into one event at the Senior Center on Sunday. Many of whom were non-Muslim.
"We are really very indebted for the support and solidarity of our community," says El-Nakhal.
The anonymous letter states that President-elect Trump is "the new Sheriff in town" and he will "do to Muslims what Hitler did to the Jews."
Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel says the letter itself does not constitute a hate crime because it does not describe a specific criminal act. However, he added the incident is still being investigated.
"We will vigorously enforce the law and we will guard individual human rights," says Pytel. "For those who commit crimes, we will find you, we will arrest you and we will ask the district attorney to prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law."
