(AP) - California Gov. Jerry Brown is launching new television commercials to defeat a ballot measure that threatens two of his so-called legacy projects.
Commercials due to start Thursday feature the Democratic governor speaking from the governor's mansion, urging voters to defeat Proposition 53.
The ballot measure would require statewide votes on big state building projects needing $2 billion or more in revenue bonds.
Brown's proposals to build two giant water tunnels for $15.7 billion and a high-speed rail system for $64 billion are the two projects that could be most immediately affected.
Brown's TV commercials and recorded phone calls to voters on the measure are a rare direct campaign effort by Brown, who's also put more than $4 million of his own campaign funds into defeating the measure.
