A Sacramento Superior Court judge has ordered Sacramento County to pay $5.3 million in attorneys fees to the lawyers who represented four female sheriff's deputies in a lawsuit.
The deputies claimed the department discriminated against them and retaliated when they complained.
In May, a jury awarded the four women $3.7 million in damages.
Judge David DeAlba says the plaintiff's attorneys should receive about $3.5 million for fees alone. He added $1.8 million using a provision that allows him to take into account the risk the plaintiff's attorneys took in suing the county and for the length of time the case took.
The judge reduced some of the per-hour fees and billable hours requested by the plaintiffs.
The County is appealing the decision in the discrimination case.
