Sacramento Police Chief Sam Somers has announced he will retire at the end of the year.
In a statement, he says he promised his family last year that he would retire before the end of 2016.
"It is my hope that in this period of transition in our community that my official announcement will aid in the City of Sacramento’s planning for the future of its police leadership," he said in a statement.
Somers presided over the department as body cameras were tested, the Nextdoor website was introduced and the Gang Task Force was revived.
The department has also been loudly criticized in recent months for two officer-involved shootings.
In one shooting, officers can be seen on cell phone video shooting a mentally-ill man in Del Paso Heights.
Somers has been with the department for 32 years. He has been the chief since 2013.
He says his last day will be Dec. 9.
