Margrit Mondavi -one of UC Davis' biggest benefactors- has died.
Interim Chancellor Ralph Hexter notified the school's community with the news in a letter Friday afternoon.
Hexter called Mrs. Mondavi "an incredible champion of our campus and our students."
He thanked her for supporting food science and the arts on campus.
She and her late husband, Robert, donated $35 million to the creation of the Center for the Performing Arts that bears their names.
Last year, the school dedicated the Margrit Mondavi Art Garden.
She was born in Orselina, Switzerland.
She moved to Napa Valley in the 1960s and became a winery tour guide.
In 1967, she went to work at the Robert Mondavi Winery. Her work there led to the winery's summer musical festival, culinary school and art collection.
She and Robert Mondavi were married in 1980.
