The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says a check of 70 registered sex offenders last week yielded 29 arrests. The offenders were taken into custody for parole or probation violations, outstanding warrants for failing to register, or for possession of narcotics or firearms
Sheriff's Sergeant Tony Turnbull says the Sacramento Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Team often struggles to locate registered sex offenders.
"That team is responsible for the supervision of over 4,000 mandated registered sex offenders here in the city and county of Sacramento," says Turnbull. "Approximately 10 percent of those are registered as transients at one time or another."
The team is comprised of officers from the sheriff's and probation departments, as well as Sacramento Police and the U.S. Marshal's Service.
In addition to the arrests, another ten people were identified as probationers or parolees and are now being investigated for failing to register.
