Sacramento's street car project received a $30 million grant from the California Cap and Trade fund Tuesday.
The streetcar would go through Councilman Steve Hansen's district.
"This is the final piece of money that we needed in order to move forward and so today is a really big day in the history of this project and in bringing street cars back to Sacramento," he says.
$75 million are in President Obama's proposed budget for the project.
Sacramento, West Sacramento, Sacramento County and Regional Transit contributed the remainder of the money required for the $150 million project.
The grant and the RT contribution make up for the failure of a ballot measure last year. A special assessment district would have raised $30 million for the project. Property owners supported the idea, but residents voted against it.
Though many assume the vehicle would resemble an old-fashioned street car, there are no guarantees it would.
The proposed route would connect West Sacramento with the Sacramento Convention Center.
If the streetcar allocation in the president's budget is approved, operations could begin by 2021.
