UPDATE 2:22 p.m.: One man is dead and a Sacramento Police Department officer is injured after a confrontation with Sacramento Police on Del Paso Boulevard Monday.
The Sacramento Police Department received calls of a man behaving erratically and waving a knife at about 9:30 a.m.
Sergeant Bryce Heinlein says several callers described a black man in his 50s with a knife. One caller said the man had a gun in his waistband. An officer saw the man at the corner of Dale and Del Paso Boulevard.
"The subject charged at the officer who was in his vehicle. In an attempt to keep himself safe, he locked the doors to his patrol car and the subject circled around his vehicle at that time," says Heinlein.
Ted Colbert lives nearby and was walking his dogs.
"This guy who was carrying a backpack and something in his hand that I couldn't see walks past me with a police vehicle following him with a bullhorn going, saying 'Drop the knife, sir.' And he's like, he turns around and goes 'C'mon. C'mon up here. I'll kick your monkey ass,'" says Colbert.
Heinlein says the man refused officers' orders to drop the knife. A Hispanic and white officer shot the man when he turned towards them with the knife raised.
Tasers are standard issue for all officers, but none were deployed.
Heinlein says the man gave no indication his attack on the vehicle was related to shootings by officers in the past week or the attack on Dallas police.
