Thursday, more than 30 Sacramento prison parolees are receiving their high school equivalency certificates.
Marc Nigel is director of adult re-entry programs for the Sacramento County Office of Education.
He says the certificate is significant to the success of many parolees and their families.
"A lot of those individuals have children. And, if we can break recidivism for not only for that individual, we're also looking at breaking it generational-wide with the family. Because, if your parents are incarcerated, statistics show you're seven times more likely to go into the juvenile justice system or follow in their footsteps."
Nigel says some of the students required a few months of classes, while others took two years to pass the test.
The program is contracted by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
About 200 parolees have graduated from the Sacramento County program with equivalency certificates in the past ten years.
